W00t!
Okay, it’s more “dorky” than “w00t,” but still. I have updated my web cam in the side bar.
Now instead of a snapshot that updates once every 30 seconds (and a PHP kludge to display an “offline” image), I’ve got a nifty flash-based player from Stickam. Live streaming video for all the voyeurs and stalkers to enjoy!
At least as long as I have the Stickam window open on my PC.
Okay. I finally grok Tumblr.
I didn’t, for well, since it came out until now. Actually, I didn’t understand tumble logging in general; it seemed gimmick-y, like a dressed up version of micro-blogging. And I never really understood the need for specialized tools for microblogging, since existing blogging tools are sufficient for micro-blogging: just type less.
But a lot of people whose opinions I greatly respect seem to be very fond of Tumblr, so I decided to look into it. And I still didn’t get it, didn’t grok it.
So I ignored it.
But it kept popping up in conversations, so I decided to give it an in-depth look. I read about it, signed up for it, and played around a bit. And then magic happened, and I grokked it.

The 4400 is back on. I watched it last nigh, and I think this season may just be able to help with my withdrawal until Heroes starts again in the fall.
And, by the way, I was totally followed like that in high school, only without the superpowers.
Or maybe not.
Oh come ON!
My main character in WoW is a dwarf warrior. When I was creating the character, I decided that I wanted a unique name, but a name that was really a name. Since I knew that I wanted a dwarf character, I started out by looking into the mythological origins of dwarves. I’d expected to find that they were Celtic or Pictish in nature, since Hollywood seem to like giving them Scottish accents (I’m pointing at you, Peter Jackson!). Instead, I discovered that dwarves were primarily Scandinavian in origin.
Unnecessary random side note: The Vikings did have some influence on Celtic culture during the period of Scandinavian expansion, though I’m not sure how much. But it may help to explain the confusion to some extent. Scandinavian influence can actually still be seen in modern English, in the names we use for the days of the week. And now back to our programme …
So I decided to look into Scandinavian names. It turns out that behindthename.com has a section of ancient Scandinavian names. Which was rather convenient for me, since that was exactly what I was looking for.
So I found an ancient Scandinavian name meaning “Wanderer,” and I though that was appropriate, so that’s what I used. My dwarf became known as: “Stigandr.”
You’d think that was a unique choice, what with the research and aptness and antiquity and no vowel between the last two consonants and all. Or at least I’d think so. But we’d be wrong.
According to the Armory, there is a character named Stigandr on eighteen different servers as of today. Eighteen!
I’m all upset now.
Oh, also the Armory is pretty cool, which was what this post was supposed to be about until I got sidetracked by the name thing.
Air 1, which is a Christian radio network if you don’t get them in your area, has a nifty contest going on, starting tomorrow.
“Win a Mac from TobyMac.”
They’re giving away a MacBook.
I know that I vowed to not buy a computer from Apple again, but … well … free isn’t buying. And MacBooks are sweet. I wouldn’t mind having a MacBook. Especially a free one.
If you don’t get them on the radio in your area, you can listen online, and also qualify online (starting tomorrow).
