I was at the Wal-Mart today on the way home from work, and I decided to buy the “Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest” DVD. They had two versions, the regular one, and a two-disc “special edition.” Being the geek that I am, I always buy the special editions. So I got the two-disc one, with the fancy slip cover emblazoned with the foils and stuff.

Or so I thought.

See, when I got home, I slid the disc out of the cardboard overwrap, unwrapped it, opened it … and found only one disc inside.

I checked my receipt, and indeed I was only charged for the one disc version. I checked the overwrap, and it clearly says “two disc special edition.” Also it has foil highlights, so it must be special.

Someone had, apparently, pulled out the two-disc from the overwrap and inserted the one-disc version. And even put it in the “two-disc” section on the shelf.

The reason I was only charged for the one-disc version was because the cardboard sleeve has a cutout in it allowing the UPC/SKU from the DVD box to show through, so when the cashier scanned it, it charged me correctly.

I think that Disney set it up that way on purpose, just in case some delinquent decides that it’s funny to put the cardboard sleeve on an everyday ordinary version of the DVD.

Frickin’ enablers.

So yeah, that was a bummer. But I was charged only for the regular version, so I guess I can’t complain too much, right?

And besides, I have the nifty foil-covered cardboard overwrap I can slip over the case and pretend that I’m special.

And somewhere out there in Southern California, someone has a “Pirates 2″ two-disc special edition set with no outer sleeve. Maybe I can sell them mine.
